my obaachan

We received a Christmas card last night from this lovely grandmother of mine. Very simple message but it made me tear up because it was one of those cases where it was the thought that counts.

This last summer my grandma and I road-tripped out to Montana for my brother's wedding. We had never spent such an extended amount of time together and it actually went quite well. Through surviving the 16 hour drive on caffeine (I was the sole driver), forgetting to buckle after restroom stops and sharing a double bed in Bismarck, ND - we had a nice little bonding experience. :)
My grandmother is a very strong woman. She married my American Grandpa and moved away from her family and homeland, she came to the States not knowing the next time she would see her parents and siblings, she didn't know much English. But today she is one capable lady - she is a US citizen, she plays a mean hand of cards (she can 'shoot the moon' in hearts, no problem), and she makes some yummy Japanese dishes.
Just wanted to share with the world how precious our grandparents can be if we take the time to realize it.
