i recently borrowed '
the book thief' at the recommendation of a few
people and thus far have been quite engaged. i was always an avid reader, college kind of threw me for a loop though and it took awhile to get back in the groove of novels. but now that i'm back on top i am always game for recommendations. i love classics like 'a tree grows in brooklyn' and 'gone with the wind' but i also enjoy contemporary literature - the likes of 'peace like a river' and 'the time traveler's wife'.
i am always reminded of a lady i once cared for. she was a difficult, hard-to-please personality. she suffered from many physical ailments and received few visitors. she spent the majority of her days parked at the dining room table with a paperback held aloft in her good hand. i remember coming upon her several times, hiccuping and big crocodile tears rolling down her cheeks. the first time i was alarmed, believing she was in physical pain. but i soon found she was merely enjoying the story, welcoming the world she was able to take part in.
a good book should leave you... slightly exhausted at the end. you live several lives while reading it. - william styron
i remember when my mom introduced me to
'the little house on the prairie' series. once i entered the world of laura, mary, ma and pa along with their dog jack, i was obsessed. not only with all things laura ingalls wilder but with all things book. and as i've matured i've come to better appreciate the impact a book can leave and the manner in which they communicate that no movie can acheive.
