yesterday was josh's birthday and we celebrated with our annual visit to his fave mexican restaurant for a free meal with fried ice cream. yum.
we had a beautiful sunny day in the upper 40's.

the restaurant is downtown in the historic part of the city. i love spending time down there, during daylight hours. after dark scares me ever since the night of our engagement. it was a november night and josh had proposed to me in a private dining area in one of the classic brick buildings (think private dining at a dinged up wooden table with a little lamp on it and couples' names graffiti-ed all over the walls, intimate and charming). we left the restaurant well after dark and were approached by a younger man who would not take his hands out of his parka pockets and gave us a bad vibe. he was asking for money and telling us he had lost his eye while in the service. we offered him my leftovers and to buy him a sandwich and all i could think was that i didn't want us to be shot to death the night of our engagement. i believe we ended up giving him some cash to leave us alone. but that part of downtown becomes shady after dark and ever since does not leave me with a good feeling.

josh chowed down on enchiladas while i enjoyed their chicken fajitas (my staple there). when we finished the delicous helado frito i gave josh his card which stated we were to wander down the street to the used bookstore to pick out a birthday present.

josh was drawn like a magnet to the WWII section, while i attempted to peruse the store. not 5 minutes later the owner said we had a few minutes to browse but that he was closing up. it was 5:20 and closing time has been 5pm. oops! thankfully i had surprised him with a different gift the night prior, so he wasn't too bummed. and said gift had also been WWII related -
The Pacific.
subsequently we went home and hung the hammock in the backyard and played with petra. back in the house we started 'the godfather' (i've never seen) with root beer floats and were tucked tightly into bed by 10:20pm on a saturday night. oh the joys of aging. :)
